I either connect chains to the cable or the cable directly to an item and lift it up to the attic. Usually, I load and my boys are in the attic unloading. I can easily lift my mower, wheel barrow, boxes of Christmas decoratios, etc. with abosolutely no problem. [2] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-08-10 Summary: lifting ... The hoist is very solid & lifts my riding lawn mower with ease. The only problem that i see is attaching over head. You need a plate to secure to joist beams. I had to cut a 1/2" plate & drill 1/2" holes to fit to the hoist & make the plate 6" longer on both ends of the hoist over all length. drilled 4 holes on each end & used 9/16" x 3" to secure hoist to a 6"x 6" joist. Not everyone has the tools to secure over head , or the way to use pipe as you have shown in your directions. Still it is a solid product. Jack kingsley ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-07-03 Summary: Electric Cable Hoist gets 2 thumbs up (well, 1-3/4) ... Very good value. I have used it to pull 1/2"-thick sheets of plywood into an attic area. I'm not a professional, so I cannot speak to "heavy" usage, but it appears great for light weight (ie., homeowner) use. The only negative is that mounting brackets do NOT have pre-drilled holes such that they can be fastened directly to a flat overhead surface. The brackets are designed to attach the hoist a horizontal pole. I don't have a pole . . . I have a wood header. So, I had to buy a drill bit to drill holes through the ...more

Electric hoist related help/definitions
Brick veneer - a four-inch brick wall used to provide an exterior finish for a house.
CFM (cubic feet per minute) - A rating that expresses the amount of air a blower or fan can move. The volume of air (measured in cubic feet) that can pass through an opening in one minute.
Capital - The principal part of a loan, i.e. the original amount borrowed.
Fire brick - Brick made of refractory ceramic material which will resist high temperatures. Used in a fireplace and boiler.
Heat gain - Heat coming into a home from sources other than its heating/cooling system. Most gains come from the sun.
Stile - The vertical upright on either side (and sometimes the center) of a panel door.
